Oberzent-Schule Beerfelden Integrierte Gesamteschule

Our school is situated in the rural region of the Odenwald in a sort of "island" position far away from cultural attractions in cities like Frankfurt or Heidelberg. The school as IGS is responsible for all students with different levels. We notice a tendency that our students avoid to get in contact with people from other countries by showing a shy behaviour. We are convinced: we can change the students' attitudes, but not the geographic disadvantaged rural area with long distances to get in contact with other European cultures. Our school has integrated a programme of inclusion for students with specific needs who take part in regular lessons. We motivate them to join this project to feel integrated as an appreciated part of our school community. Our project subject “Dance” has a magic effect on all students because the language of movement and music is the same for everybody and focusses on fun and feeling of dance vibrations excluding prejudges. 10% of our students are students with migrant background for whom the participation in this project represents also a social factor of integration. They even receive an important role to show and teach their different dance styles. “Dance” represents a motivating character on the students' emotions to lead an active life as balance to cognitive competences and to develop their social team competences in a peaceful atmosphere. Our local resources like experts for “Dance Rooms” and Dance Schools, the regional culture club “Sound of the Forest”, the traditional Folklore Group “Von der Aue”, professional dancers from Berlin “Detlef D! Soost Company" for Hip Hop Dance support our dance creations and research of their roots - and the students’ competences to communicate with these organizations. The students learn and teach their dance language from each other during international project meetings in every partner school as step on the European dance floor. A presentation for the whole school community takes place at Theatre-Music-Art-Festival at our school, organized by our students every school year. Our project is carried out in an interdisciplinary way: music, art, sport, biology, national and English language. In coordination with our school band, the group “Visual Communication”, the “Design group” the students develop different dance ideas (performances with poetry) and create a new European dance style with creation of corporate design. Our role implies the European coordination and our emphasis is art.

We also have a European Section for students with a French family background or a potential for language acquisition. We have the highest proportion of Special Needs/Learning Support students nationally which challenges us daily to make the curriculum relevant and accessible to all. In a European context this project would allow us to experience international best practice. We Teach dance in fourth year and we appreciate the benefits on the wellbeing of students of all levels and abilities. A co-creative activity such as “Take a Chance: Let’s Dance!” greatly enhances teaching and learning for all ages in a cross-curricular, multi-lingual way. Dance links up with Physical Education, Languages, Music, Art and Poetry. Dance is universal and connects us all. It creates a peaceful fun, peaceful environment where young people can express themselves, exchange ideas, make friends, share experiences, celebrate life and strive to be better citizens at home, in Europe and Globally. This project helps young people to be more self aware, mindful, creative, co-creative and to have compassion for themselves and others. It encourages them to embrace the constant change and diversity in their lives and in the world and become empowered and self-reliant people.

Liceo  Benedetti  -  Tommaseo

Our school is located in the historic centre of Venice, a city affected by mass tourism, which has brought about a decrease in the quality of community life. Despite the many cultural events, Venice is mainly used as a souvenir stall, and consumed in a hasty and superficial way both by visitors and by Venetian young people.  European mobility projects are opportunities for the students for true encounters with other foreigners, by working together instead of merely brushing shoulders with them. Notwithstanding its human-sized appearance, our city has few facilities for the young to meet, except for bars or sports clubs. If our students are interested in the arts, they may privately play an instrument, sing in bands or learn (ballet) dancing. We have noticed that these students are more self-confident, responsible and organized than others. A school project based on dance can offer the opportunity to develop those qualities and make the most of the students’ kinaesthetic and musical intelligence. The curriculum of the social studies department focuses on pedagogical, social and psychological topics. Themes like trust and cooperation will be observed with expertise through questionnaires, developed and assessed by students. All students, including the disabled, will explore issues related to movement through music, as examples of research-action on the effect of music therapy. More and more students in our school are either first or second generation immigrants. Research on their own traditional dances will be an important intercultural activity.  Students in the language department will facilitate communication improving the whole Comenius team’s linguistic competence. Venetian students will link up with Venice “Dance Biennale”.

Gemlik Celal Bayar Anadolu Lisesi

Our school, Gemlik Celal Bayar Anadolu Lisesi is in Gemlik/Bursa in Turkey . There are 570 students and 44 teachers in our school. Our school is situated in the eastern part of the Marmora region.Gemlik is an industrial and harbour city and it is famous for its olives. However, our students do not have the opportunity to meet foreigners, learn about their cultures and improve their language competence. We are aware of  their lack self-confidence in social and individual areas. For this reason, they are tend to avoid to get in contact with people. Therefore our aim is to support our students to gain self-confidence by participating in this project. Most of them know and learn about the world only through the Internet, which is very artificial. They need the opportunity to meet students at their ages in a social and realistic way to overcome prejudices and negative feelings so that they can integrate with and be a part of the European culture. This project will help us  develop our students' physical and mental abilities. Dance is one major field which is able to bring  people from all kinds of backgrounds together. Getting to know each other and becoming aware of the richness of differences and communicating through dance and social activities will be an important aim of our role in this project. We appreciate this European Comenius programme to enhance our students' individual and social development. We would like them to be open-minded, see beyond the borders, experience and realize the fact that they are a part of a rich European family.
